The H70 is packaged in an 8 x 16 (8 I/O slots, up to 16 disk/media bays) 8-EIA rack drawer. Like other recent RS/6000 rack-mounted systems, the Model H70 is black. It is designed to be used in the 7014 Model S00 Rack, which is also black, or it can be installed in any existing RS/6000 rack.

The Model H70 server includes a modular disk subsystem that allows fast, easy addition and replacement of drives. It has a hot-swappable storage maximum capacity of 109.2 GB and a flexible I/O subsystem of eight PCI slots: four 32-bit and four 64-bit. The H70 is shipped with the internal adapters and devices configured and installed; software can also be preinstalled if desired. The H70 provides enhanced reliability with its standard, redundant cooling design and optional redundant power when ordered with a second internal power supply.

The H70 can be used as a stand-alone, multi-user, application or database server and has the connectivity to participate in most currently installed UNIX** and PC networks. It can also be configured for use as a SCSI, Ultra-SCSI, or Serial Storage Architecture (SSA) RAID server by taking advantage of the "Under-the-Covers" storage expansion capability, and it allows for system growth.

The H70 operates on 220 volt AC power. It can also be ordered in a -48 volt DC version to meet the special requirements of the telecommunications industry.
